Why Your Oily Skin Is Actually Dehydrated - And Why That Changes Everything

You have been washing your face twice a day. Skipping moisturiser because you already look shiny. Wondering why your skin keeps getting worse. 

If you have oily skin in South East Asia, you have almost certainly been told the same things. "Use a foaming cleanser. Skip the moisturiser. Look for mattifying products. Control that shine". And if you have been following that advice for years, you have probably also noticed that none of it actually worked. Your skin is still oily. It is still breaking out. And somewhere along the way, it started to feel tight and sensitive as well.

That is not a coincidence. That is a predictable biological response to exactly what you were told to do.

The Oil-Hydration Paradox

Your skin produces oil through sebaceous glands. The amount of oil it produces is not fixed — it responds to signals. One of the most powerful signals is dehydration. When your skin’s water content drops, it compensates by producing more oil to protect the surface.

This means that every time you strip your skin with a harsh cleanser, every time you use an alcohol-based toner, every time you skip moisturiser because you are already oily — you are telling your skin it needs to produce more sebum. Not less.

The result is a cycle that most oily-skin routines actually create and maintain: strip, produce oil, strip again, produce more oil. Repeat indefinitely.

 

Why Humidity Makes This Worse

In a hot, humid climate like Singapore &  Malaysia, this cycle is amplified. The skin’s barrier — the outermost layer of lipids and proteins that controls what comes in and what stays in — is constantly under stress from heat, UV radiation, pollution, and moisture fluctuation.

A stressed barrier loses water faster. When it loses water faster, the sebaceous glands compensate harder. This is why oily skin in tropical climates often feels simultaneously greasy on the surface and tight or uncomfortable underneath. It is not a contradiction.

The ingredient Science: What Oily Skin Actually Needs

Research consistently shows that acne-prone, oily skin is often deficient in linoleic acid — a specific fatty acid that plays a critical role in regulating sebum composition and maintaining barrier integrity. When linoleic acid is low, the skin produces thicker, more comedogenic sebum that clogs pores more easily.

The solution is not to remove oil. It is to replace the missing fatty acids with the right ones.

The key is choosing the right oil. High-linoleic oils — such as grape seed, rosehip, and hemp seed — are appropriate for acne-prone skin. High-oleic oils — such as coconut, olive, and avocado — tend to worsen congestion and are better suited to dry or mature skin without an acne concern.

This distinction matters more than whether a moisturiser contains oil at all. The question is not oil versus no oil. It is which fatty acid profile the formula uses, and whether it matches the deficiency the skin is already experiencing.

 

What to Change Starting Today?

  1. Swap harsh, stripping cleansers for one that removes excess oil without compromising the skin barrier. Look for a glycerin-based formula that uses gentle, plant-derived glucoside surfactants—these create a light foam while helping maintain hydration and barrier balance.
  2. Moisturise every single morning and evening. Use a pea-sized amount — you need less than you think.
  3. Avoid alcohol-based toners. They evaporate quickly and feel refreshing in the moment, but they dehydrate the barrier and trigger exactly the oil rebound you are trying to avoid.
  4. Give it six weeks. Your sebaceous glands will not recalibrate overnight. Consistency is the mechanism.
